Self-employment in Rockford, Illinois
Did you see the Rockford Register Star today, Sunday April 19th, 2009? The Local and State section discusses in great detail the 2010 budget issues for local schools and park districts because of the crumbling economy, as they look at short falls all the way out to 2011. I know that the folks at Winnebago County Adult Probation are telling me that they need me to e-mail my attendance records for my domestic violence classes to save paper.
Folks, that is about 8 sheets of paper per month. And I know the Winnebago County Board has had to slash jobs and the folks at Adult Probation are looking at loosing hours and jobs, so every sheet of paper will be important to them.
And the Register Star Business Section goes on to talk about how the recession impacts the Black community more so than any other minority segment of our county's population.
I first noticed my clients struggling to make payments to me in the summer of 2007. Many of them were looking at a stay in the county jail as their only option, as they had no funds for Court ordered counseling.
I know that at age 61, if I had to go into the job market, I would struggle to find a job in the traditional way, so I have been developing my expertise online. Even if talented and energetic, what employer struggling to build online will hire someone much closer to retirement than a mortgage? Luckily for me business is going online. (Tell the truth, when was the last time you looked for anything in the Yellow Pages?)
The very first tool I used about four years ago, to get me started, was the Super Affiliate Handbook by Rosalind Gardner.
Her book is a great place to get started.
One of the products she mentioned was SBI or Site Build It, which is the platform I use for my websites now, and I teach a class at Rock Vally College now called Building a Successful Online Business Using the Internet which covers the ten day action guide for SBI.
Of course, I am now an affiliate for a huge number of products and companies, primarily related to counseling and personal growth, and I am working to make this tool available to underserved in Winnebago County.
In the meantime, check out the RockValley College Continuing Education catalog for the summer session of my class. You can get started there, or just get the Super Affiliate Handbook.
More soon, Mike Logan

Rockford Self-Employment
Rockford self-employment seems like a necessity these days. Oh yeah, welcome to my new blog about creating some economic insurance for yourself.
Not sure about you, but I have a couple of good friends here in Rockford, Illinois, zip code 61103 who have been laid off recently. (April 2009)
They are fathers, and husbands, and eminently qualified in their fields. And now they join the ranks of the anxious. Who is to say when they will find another job, and if it will pay as well as the old job?
My business is experiencing a big slow down, in part because I am dependent on referral sources which are impacted by our year and one-half old recession.
My wife and I are hunkering down, and working as many hours as possible, and I have been building an online presence which has generated income.
This is not retirement income yet, but it is growing, and has the potential to continue to grow.
Now that is how you spell relief.
I have been teaching others how to do this at Rock Valley College, in a course called Building a Successsful Business Online Using the Internet.
We have had classes three out of the last four semesters, and this semesters class is filled with folks who are go-getters, and five of them have websites up and running at the eight week mark.
The platform for this class is the Site Build It model, which I have been using for my websites for the last three years.

The Course
If you are a business owner my age, 61, and you grew up using the Yellow Pages to find your local business connections, then you might have been as mystified as me by their demise, and now you are reading about newspapers going out of business, so who will read your want ads?
Well, fellow business owner, people will find you online and that is all there is to that. No more yellow pages, no more want ads, no more help-wanted.
In fact, folks are finding jobs online now at a social networking site called Twitter, almost in real time.
The world of business is changing. The good news is you can get in it, the bad news is, you better start now.
Just like any other skill, you can do this, if I can do it, you can. I was proud in 1996 of not being able to use or caring to learn about computers. Now I will be putting my kids through college with the money I earn online, right from my home office. Here is a link to the course at Rock Valley College.
Perhaps you would like to check out some other resources online about self-employment?
Here is a great one!

Next post, I will talk about the SBI services which will build your site for you, or an opportunity to attend an e-learner program from the comfort of your Rockford home office.
